Answers about Varmam / Marma therapy, our treatment approach and booking.

What is Varmam / Marma therapy or Chikitsa?

Varmam therapy, also known as Varmam Maruththuvam, is a subsystem of the Tamil Siddha medical system.

It is used to support concerns relating to bones, nerves and mind. Such concerns are generally understood to arise from a blockage in the flow of life energy to the relevant parts of the body. When this flow is cleared, the body is supported to rejuvenate and begin healing on its own.

Varmam is a subtle energy that enables the functioning of the whole body, mind and soul. The places where this energy resides and helps to activate both body and life are called Varmam / Marma locations. Life energy is distributed throughout the body at 108 locations. When its flow is affected by injury, stress, strain, abnormal physical activity, abnormal food habits and so on, it disturbs the metabolic and physiological activity of the organ or region concerned, and can ultimately result in discomfort and pain.

Even before herbs, metals, minerals and animal products were used as medicine, people found they could use their own fingers to ease their ailments. This was called Kai Maruthuvam (hand-based treatment), which later became popularly known as Varmam / Marma therapy.

When Varmam locations are disrupted, ailments can arise. Adangal supply energy to adjacent Varmam locations, which are activated by Thadavalmuraigal (an applied system that stimulates several locations along a path by following set procedures) to unblock and energise the flow of energy towards its natural state.

Varmam / Marma therapy is a unique system that can work independently, with or without medicines, and can integrate with other systems of medicine.

Why is Agasthya Wellness Center unique for Varmam / Marma therapy?

It is said that this ancient system should only be learned from an authentic and competent Varmam Master (Aasan) to protect the purity of this healing art. We are blessed to study under the guidance of our teacher and Varmam Aasan, an accomplished Varmam healer, Sri Ramesh Babu — founder of Varma Kalpa Rejuvenation Center, Bangalore (VKRC). He has devoted his life to spreading Varmam knowledge, training and treating through Varmam.

Sri Ramesh Babu is the author of “Varmam – An Insight into the Ancient System of Healing”, the first English book on Varmam based on ancient manuscripts, available via Amazon.

He is the mentor who is always available to guide us, so that each client receives care at its best, individually. He guides the therapists on any changes needed in the regular procedure depending on the condition of each client.
